Rox, your avatar picture is gorgeous! I couldn't see it enough when it is small. I have a friend of a friend whose son is going to study abroad in Perth. In looking at the old posts, I think I saw that that is where you are?? I wish my daughter was going there instead of Argentina because I would have Auntie Rox look out for her!

    Hi Folks

Helene came up with the grand idea of starting a Bears Annoymous Group - for those of us who would like to keep in touch, and hopefully news of those magnificent Bears, that we've all grown to love, the Sanctuary, McNeil Falls, the Pratt Museum and Larry and Elizabeth, of course.  I've been wondering how we could acheive this and have come up with a very simple plan.

Create "The BAG blog" on the forum of the wildcam we would be viewing, which will be a "place" (in cyberspace) where we all meet up!  The first to arrive at the wildcam could initally post "The BAG blog" and then we can all catch up from there.  By having "our" Blog,  we won't interupt the other bloggers in the forum....... Cyberspace armchair travelling is THE best alternative to the real thing - What do you think ?

Dear BAG's - while we wait for our beloved BEARS I thought to take us all on a trip down memory lane.  This was the first entry on the BAG blog  - written on 12th August 2006.  I like the question "what do you think"  The BAG blog has certainly evolved.  Thanks for your creativity Helene

G'Day Rox.  That is a great picture for your new avatar.  Really shows off the country-side well.  And, the dingo is a pretty proud looking critter.  Sounds like our bears will be back with us soon - huh?  Have you figured out yet how to sneak a look at the cam in case it's on your families "forbidden" day?  Do your town libraries have internet hook-up for patron use?  Maybe you can suddenly need to drop over to the library for something.  Devil

WOW ! this picture is a little ripper, even though I say so myself (Little Ripper - Aussie term for Little Beauty - which is an Aussie term for GREAT OUTCOME !)

This picture was from the home page of the service provider Westnet, which has "photos of the week" on it's home page - mostly Australian pics from WA subscibers.  This one is this weeks "Photo of the Week.  I have to say, I LOVE IT !  It is taken at BANK ROCK, the  GOLDFIELDS near Kalgoorlie WA.

Hi LAP - It is really good to hear from you too.  It is almost like everyone has been away and coming home to roost - and in some way, I suppose we have, considerin gall the destinations NGM has provided us with !  I am not sure if the "tiny pic" photo of the dingo will be any larger, but will have a go, like all good Aussies do !  In the event it doesn't work, I have posted the site that I took it from and you can see the Dingo much clearer from there.  I worked in a place called Lake Argyle in the Kimberly's and saw many Dingo's there, the puppies of which are gorgeous !  (Wild dogs) wonder if they are related to your wolves.  I might just google to find out.  Thanks HEAPS for doing such a FAB job with the Chime In thread as always.  It's a really good source of info http://www.myfoto.com.au/photooftheweek/

Well here goes, lets wait and see what happens:Wink

In looking around the National Geographic forums, I saw a posting on the Crane Forum: http://forums.ngm.com/forums/thread/95913.aspx post # 96235, from John Kondis. It seems one of the reasons we haven't been hearing from him lately is that he's been away on paternity leave!

Board of Game kills hunt for McNeil area bears
    MCNEIL RIVER AREA:
Public outcry leads panel to reverse a two-year-old decision.
    By ALEX DEMARBAN
    Anchorage Daily News

    (Published: March 7, 2007)
Persuaded by a flood of public testimony, the Board of Game unanimously voted Tuesday not to allow bear hunting on state lands near one of the world's premier bear-viewing areas.

"It's a clear win for photographers and a clear win for the bears," said John Toppenberg, head of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance in Anchorage, after the vote.

The Alaska Game Board voted two years ago to allow the hunt on land -- two parcels totaling about 95,000 acres -- south and east of McNeil River State Game Sanctuary.

This decision would taken effect this July, opening the way for a hunt in October for the first time in 22 years.

The board bowed to public testimony provided at the meeting, which began Friday, as well as thousands of letters and e-mails that overwhelmingly opposed the hunt, Chairman Cliff Judkins of Wasilla said.

"Thirty years ago, you could have handled these issues just on biology," he said. "Today you can't. This is what the public wants, and viewing is a recognized use."

Every summer, thousands of tourists visit the sanctuary and nearby areas on the Alaska Peninsula to photograph bears as they snatch fish from rivers and loll in grass.

Opponents said hunting these bears is unethical because they're relatively used to people and won't run from hunters.

More than 8,200 brown bears prowl the peninsula, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Hunters kill about 320 every two years.

State biologists said a small program -- about two to three bear-hunt permits could have been issued a year -- wouldn't endanger the bear population in the area.

But they opposed the idea, saying the critical testimony, including from many hunters, could have hurt the state's reputation with hunters around the world.

The board did the right thing, said Rod Arno, head of the pro-hunting Alaska Outdoor Council. He supported a hunt but said the board was "politically correct."

"It just shows me that there's more will to close it, and that's fine with me," he said.

The state shouldn't create any other bear-viewing areas, he said.

"We're pretty jazzed," said Jim Stratton, Alaska-region director of the National Parks Conservation Association.

His group collected more than 10,000 comments against the hunt, he said. He presented them Saturday when he spoke before the Game Board.

Despite what some people think, the board listens to the public, board member Ron Somerville said.

The board originally passed the proposal to help Naknek and King Salmon villagers who wanted a hunt, he said.

The state bear sanctuary, and the 95,000 acres that were proposed for hunting, lie east of those villages, across Katmai National Park and Preserve. The board wants the federal government to add the 95,000 acres to the national park in exchange for lands on the west side of the park, closer to the villagers.

The board had originally hoped the hunting proposal would compel the agency to accept the long-sought land swap, Somerville said.

The villagers complain that park regulations prohibit them from using off-road vehicles such as ATVs on portions of a trail that zig-zags through the park, limiting their access to hunting grounds.

The National Park Service plans to begin a public process this year that will allow the vehicles on the trail, agency officials wrote in a letter to Somerville in February.

"At least they're trying to resolve that," Somerville said.

    Iditarod: Susan Butcher...

    Name: Karen/California
    E-mail: Not specified

since today is the start of Alaska's 2007 Iditarod 35 - and Alaska is naming the first Saturday in March as Susan Butcher Day, I thought we might celebrate her!

Susan Butcher: She carved up the competition
No other Iditarod musher has ever had five years like Susan Butcher's stretch between 1986 and 1990. In those years Butcher finished first, first, first, second -- by less than one hour -- and first again. That five-year period was the highlight of an Iditarod racing career that was nearly all highlights. In 12 of the 17 years Butcher ran the race, she finished among the top five mushers. It is a record that made Butcher's selection to the Daily News Iditarod Hall of Fame automatic.

    • Born: Cambridge, Mass. • Hometown: Manley • Died in 2006 due to cancer.

This year she is #1 on the Starting List of Mushers- an Honorary Postion!

Quote: "I have been known to walk in front of my team for 55 miles, with snow shoes, to lead them through snow storms, in non-racing situations, where I could have just as easily radioed a plane to come and get me."
