WooHoo...way to go KJ & Keith.  I sent in some data today - hope others will do the same!  It's free & takes less than a minute to do. Come on...it's Springtime, tell 'em what you see...

Yep, me too!  I went to the site and have already found a couple of the things they have listed to be on the look-out for.  Robins are #1 but then they don't really leave Ohio entirely.  We sometimes see a couple of them sitting in the snow - not sure what they find to eat.  This "Spring" I saw a couple of them sitting down all fluffed up to get warm then they disappeared for a couple of weeks.  They are back in full force now - really loud in the mornings.  Also have lots of white clover in the area.  It's good for the lawn soil but kind of spoils the look.  I'm looking forward to seeing more of the items on their list and even some they don't have listed since that means it's getting warmer.

    Great idea Karen!

    Karen/California:

Elephant seal refuses to go back to his beach, hanging out at Hearst Ranch

    Tuesday: January 8, 2008

    HEARST RANCH

An elephant seal ditches the beach and heads for the "Enchanted Hill." The 1,500 pound creature has been hanging out on Hearst Ranch for the past few days now.

The seal is on ranchland located just south of Piedras Blancas, off Highway 1 across from the beach.

Wildlife experts say they have dealt with seals on the highway before, but they don't believe they have ever had a case quite like this one.

It's not what you would call a natural setting for an elephant seal. While the rest of his colony relaxes on the beach, this young adult male frustrates wildlife experts who are trying to convince the big guy to go back to the beach.

Thanks, Karen. Was this the one I told you I saw on the news?

    Sonar Restrictions...

The following is a message I received from National Resources Defense Council:

Fantastic news! A federal court in California has just imposed the strongest-ever protections for whales against an onslaught of military sonar.

The new controls are the result of an NRDC lawsuit that demanded the Navy rein in its deadly sonar before beginning two years of maneuvers near the Channel Islands -- one of the world's most sensitive environments and home to five endangered species of whales.

The Navy itself estimates that the booming sonar would harass or harm marine mammals some 170,000 times -- and cause permanent injury in more than 400 cases.

U.S. District Judge Florence-Marie Cooper said the Navy's existing plan for protecting marine mammals was "grossly inadequate." And she has ordered the Navy to put a series of precautionary measures in place -- many of them recommended by NRDC -- that will go a long way toward protecting whales from needless injury and death.

For starters, the Navy will not be permitted to use its dangerous mid-frequency sonar within 12 miles of the California coast, a zone that is heavily used by migrating whales and dolphins. Sonar will also be banned in the Catalina Basin, an underwater canyon with a high density of whales.

The Navy will also have to monitor for marine mammals -- from the ship and from the air -- both before and during its sonar exercises. If any marine mammals are spotted within 2200 yards of the ship, the Navy will have to shut down its sonar.

These safeguards represent a giant leap forward in our decade-long campaign to make sure that whales don't have to die for the sake of military practice.

Needless to say, this fight is far from over and many more court battles lay ahead.

But case by case, we are accomplishing what many thought

impossible: forcing the Navy to obey our environmental laws and stop its needless killing of whales -- and all without compromising military readiness.

Thank you for standing with NRDC in defense of the world's marine mammals.

    Sincerely,

    Frances Beinecke

    President

    NRDC

P.S. On a related front, we still need your help to stop the Navy's plan to put a sonar training range next to a key migratory route of the endangered North Atlantic right whale.

Please read the latest call to action from NRDC Trustee James Taylor and send your own electronic message to the Navy from the NRDC Action Fund website:

    Tales of Whales...

Hi Everybody, as we wait for the seal cam to come back online again (probably late December or January) here's some interesting information from Monterey Bay Aquarium:

    Tales of Whales

As the home to 27 different species of marine mammals, the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is always a great place to see ocean wildlife. The biggest show of the year begins this month—one that spans much of the West Coast of North America, from Alaska to Baja California.

From now through spring, gray whales will make their annual migration from Alaskan feeding grounds to breeding lagoons on the Pacific coast of Baja. These majestic animals are easy to see from shore or on a whalewatching boat trip originating in most ports along the coast.
    Enjoy!  Smile

Thanks Rita, I haven't been keeping tabs on the seals as much as I used to.  I've been watching the bears!  I guess Daniel will be coming to fix up the sealcam for commentary soon, like he did for the bears.  This is will be interesting. I'm looking forward to it. Cheers!

    Re: Live Seals!

I love watching the seals, but the logo is a bit too large. I notice the same logo on the eagle cam. I hope this is not the logo that will be used on all of the NG cams in the future. It really ruins the viewing experience. Thank you.

    stormy

Well I haven't had the seals up for some time..All the safari excitement...I'm watching them now and it is very dark and windy..wow those pups are playful!...I don't know if it is because it is overcast or the time of day..I plan to watch more in the days to come to see when they are most active..would be wasteful for Mary to show us around if it is the hottest part of the day and they just lay there..that's what I think anyway
