I've received a lot of emails about what I feed my pets, 1 dog & 2 cats:
I do not even enter the pet food section at the store, I go to the canned food for human consumption and read the labels!
> canned chicken
> canned turkey
> canned tuna
> canned mackerel
(only if in oil or salt water: gently rinse & de-bone & put in plastic container)
> liverwurst
> hotdogs (hey...I'm not perfect & they love this as a treat!)
How to supplement this is by adding:
> crushed cereal (bran flakes)
> cooked rice (save the water--it's where the nutrients are!)
> scrambled eggs
> or go to the health food store & get some grains to mix in
> don't forget the garlic!
I also feed them dried duck and/or chicken strips that I buy at Costco (only place I've seen offer them at a decent price). I have to cut up the pieces, so get a cheap pair of meat/bone scissors.
If you've a discount store nearby (Dollar Store, 98Cent store, Food Outlet) then you can keep this affordable for your pets. Many of these places offer 2 cans for $1.
Basically, let your imagination go wild as the "safe" possibilities are endless!
Homemade recipes are very good to do, because you can freeze portions for the week & it makes it fast and simple for you.
BOTTOM LINE: Read the labels on EVERYTHING....no gluten of any kind.
