    ginlyn:

    Hi Eden,

just to let you know that Afke and I saw a Spotted Dikkop at the edge of the Pond tonight. I see you have posted photos back in February.

Hi Ginlyn. Thanks. I thought it might be easier [and hopefully quicker to load/refresh the thread pages] to provide a photographic At-A-Glance guide to the birds at the 4 cam sites.Pete's Pond,Africam,Djuma and Elephant Plains...Pete's Pond being the best place to spot and ID birds.

Spotted Dikkop photo is on Page 4.

    AT-A-GLANCE: WOODPECKERS & WRYNECKS

    1] Bennett's Woodpecker

    F?

    M

The female has diagnostic brown throat and cheek stripe. The male has a full red crown and moustachial stripes contrasting with plain face and throat.

If someone could get a better image of this Woodpecker [M & or F]

    2] Golden-tailed Woodpecker

    M

    F

    3] Cardinal Woodpecker

M [Note:Crown is not full red.The forehead is chocolate to chestnut brown

    M

F    Female has buff brown forehead and crown.

4]  Ground Woodpecker [Unlikely, but you'd never know if one'll crop up on the cams.?]

Females lack the dark stripe on the cheeks.Otherwise, they are similar to Males. Ground Woodpeckers nest in holes on the ground or in banks or mounds and do not nest in trees. They have a habit of peeking over or around rocks or boulders or fallen trunks almost comically. The habit is also noticable even away from obstactles. [as shown by the 2 Males? in second image  below]

    5] Bearded Woodpecker

    M

Females lack only the red crown and nape.
