In TRAVELER’s 2001 March issue, we feature Taku, British Columbia, an environmentally rich, habitat for grizzly and black bears. The animals travel along the river and find food there, according to Dr. Stephen Herrero, author of Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance. Here, we offer Herrero’s tips on preventing a bear attack.

WildCam Grizzlies Starts in 1 Day!

    From National Geographic Traveler magazine:
    "Computer with a View"
With only a 14,400k connection to the Internet, you can travel from your desktop to the Acropolis in 4.3 seconds. The fusion of Internet technology and travel has created a new mode of tourism. Webcams—digital cameras that supply live images on the Internet—provide real-time visual information from far away, which can go a long way toward satisfying deskbound explorers.

Bear-Viewing in North America Stirs Concerns about Safety
They gather in southeastern Alaska, in Yellowstone, and on the coast of British Columbia, wherever the land is wild and the salmon are plentiful.

They're bear viewers, and in the past decade they have grown dramatically in number. But as the tourists flock, some scientists, wildlife managers, and business owners warn that the fledgling industry needs stricter guidelines. (January 22, 2002)

WildCam Grizzlies Starts in 4 Days!

    From National Geographic News

Bald Eagle, Grizzly: U.S. Icons Endangered No More?
More than 30 years ago the bald eagle—United States' national symbol of strength and freedom—had almost vanished from the skies. Today that's changed. Federal protection and a ban on the pesticide DDT has helped the raptor's population soar to more than 7,600 breeding pairs. Now the government is moving forward with plans to remove the bird from the U.S. endangered species list, possibly next year.

Also underway are controversial plans to remove a grizzly bear population from the endangered species list, where the bear has been listed as threatened since 1975. (July 2, 2004)

"Grizzly Man" Movie Spurs New Looks at a Grisly Death
The documentary Grizzly Man revisits the life and violent death of Timothy Treadwell, a controversial wildlife activist who spent 13 summers living among bears in the Alaskan wilderness.

Treadwell was discovered dead and partially eaten by one of his beloved grizzlies at his campsite in Katmai National Park in the fall of 2003. His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, was also killed. (February 5, 2006)

This is a reallly fantastic site! THANKS!

The info. is fascinating.  I was really surprised about the hybrid bear. Not that it could be done, but that bears, living in very different habitats, actually got to meet and make that possible, in the wild.

Can't wait till July 5th!Big Smile

    G'day Mary

This is a really great site.  Thanks so much for searching out such interesting info !  Day 7 was really amazing - a hybrid - PB X GB - amazing !

Interesting how their diet varies, from HUGE CHUNKS OF MOOSE FLESH, to skillfully catching Salmon and then nibbling (probably not the best word, just seems that way to me) nibbling on sedge and berries.  !

Thanks for these insightful postings Mary........What have you got in store for the last day I wonder.

WildCam Grizzlie Starts in 6 Days!

From the May 2004 National Geographic magazine:

Nature’s Brutal Bounty Lured by the scent of a fresh kill, a grizzly bear easily chased away the wolves. Grasping the moose's hip in its powerful jaws, the bear yanked the heavy carcass onto a gravel bar, then tore large chunks of flesh from the moose's hindquarter. One moose can provide several hundred pounds of red meat, a rich source of protein—and a key to survival—for carnivores facing Alaska's long, barren winters.

    From National Geographic News:

    Polar Bear-Grizzly Hybrid Discovered
DNA analysis has confirmed that a bear shot in the Canadian Arctic last month is a half-polar bear, half-grizzly hybrid. While the two bear species have interbred in zoos, this is the first evidence of a wild polar bear-grizzly offspring. (May 11, 2006)
