Re: Technical Updates/Viewing Issues: Polar Bear Cam

Welcome Anna.  Sometimes it takes a bit of time to get replies to postings, particularly in forums of cameras that are out of season.  The Polar Bear cam is still a ways off for this season (hope to see something around late Sept or Early Oct).  For now you can however see some archived footage.  Go to this NGM address:     http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/wildcam/  , then select WILDCAM POLAR BEARS from the list over on the upper list of that page.  It might take a few seconds for the page and the camera to come up.  You will need to have RealPlayer on your computer.  There are other ways to view the polar bears (and the other ones also).  The technical threads contain the various hints.  For now, I recommend that you watch each of the cameras (mostly archived footage from last year) in the NGM page.  You can cruise the forums to catch on to good ways to both watch and read in two different browser windows.  It gets really fun sometimes to have a couple different cameras up while reading about something.

Be careful though, this is all very additive and can be detrimental to good health lack of sleep eventually got to all of us.  If you've been around a while and your posting count just doesn't agree with your experience level, I appologize.  Hope you like the cameras and the forums.  Hang in with us and start joining in on the forum threads.  Good to see another new poster!  If the URL above doesn't work, post back in one of the forums and someone will jump in to help you get connected with the camera of choice.  BTW, the AFRICA (Pete's Pond) camera is the only active one at the present tiem.

The Polar bears start in the middle of October and end around the end of November. The bears are only around for a short time before the bay freezes and they leave for their hunting areas

Re: Polar Bear Cam 2007 Season Coming to a Close

I, too, want to say thank you, thank you for letting me see the bears and enjoy them.  They are awesome animals.  I get the biggest kick out of them sparring.  I watched one of the bears the other rday approach the buggy.  The people in the buggy came out on the back balcony and he stood up.  Well, I bet they were thrilled and a little nervous at the same time, because he sure is tall when he stands up and he was able to touch the enclosure for the balcony.  It was fun to watch.  Thank you again for letting us have a glimpse into this world of polar bears.  Am looking forward to watching next year.

I just wanted to thank all who give so much to let me watch these wonderful bears.

It is so enjoyable to see them in their own world.

    Many many thanks...

Polar Bear Cam 2007 Season Coming to a Close

Dear Polar Bear Cam Community Members,

The live broadcast of Polar Bear Cam is coming to a close.

This year our cameras sent out some unforgettable live video - - bears sparring, up to at least eight bears in one place, and Dancer, a large, male bear who returns to the area every year, investigated Buggy One. Patrick King, a 12th grade student, guest-operated the camera, and blogged to keep us in the loop.  Our polar bear experts answered your questions during their online question and answer sessions. And the views from Cape Churchill have been amazing as well, with its stunning landscape and frequent bear activity.

On behalf of the National Geographic WildCam Program, we’d like to thank our partners, whose extraordinary efforts brought you Polar Bear Cam 2007:

Polar Bears International, Frontier North's Tundra Buggy® Adventure,  SeeMore Wildlife Systems and RealNetworks, Inc.

A special thank you to all of our Polar Bear Cam community members and fans.  We have enjoyed reading your posts this season - - we appreciate your curiosity and affinity for nature and all things polar bears!

We look forward to seeing you back again with us next season.  Until then, be sure to check out other WildCam activities that are coming up or going on now:

    Lisa NGS:
Dear Polar Bear Cam Community Members,

The good news is that we are still broadcasting live video from Polar Bear Cam! As you may have seen from the Web site, we had planned to keep the live feed up until November 18th, however, we, and our partners out on Buggy One know how much you wish to continue seeing polar bears, and are doing all they can to keep the live feed up for as long as possible.  Eventually the weather conditions will become too severe to proceed.

Thus, the live feed could be turned off any day now, most likely between November 21st and  25th.  Or perhaps even sooner.  We will all just have to watch and see, and enjoy these extra few days of polar bear viewing!

Thank you to all of our viewers who have written in to us upon the winding down of this season.  As always, we appreciate your support and hearing from you.

    Best,
Lisa, Mary, and the WildCam Team

    Re: Polar Bear Cam Live!

Well gesh, PBC hasn't been on very long,at least I haven't been able to get on only a few times. I love watching the bears, it seems there is more snow on the ground than there was last year.

Sad  If this is the last day, (bummer) thank you to those for even this litte tad of time to see them. I suppose there is a lot of back ground work to make the Cam Live, I do appreciate all that you have done to make it so.

    Happy Holidays to all,

    LorraineSmile

Sad to say, I don't see the RP emblem you mention.  Is it on the screen, or somewhere else on the page?  (I'm using Firefox on an iMac, which sometimes causes sites to look different to me).

In any case, thanks for your help.  And it looks as if this is the last day...  Boo.

    Re: Polar Bear Cam Live!

Duckbeak, When you open the cam on the main page, there is a little RP emblem in the lower right hand corner.  Click on it twice, (once to activate it and again to bring up the menu) Then choose to play in stand alone player.   Save to favorites in RP and you should be good to go.
