    Fun Facts

Hey Kids Smile A polar bears white coat helps it to blend in with its surroundings.  This is called camouflage.  See how well the polar bear below is able to blend in with the snow and ice around him.

And here's another one.  Can you spot the bears in the picture below.  There are actually two bears (Mama and cub) snuggled up together.

Here is a Word Search Match for you to do.  Enjoy

    Polar Bear Poems

Hi Kids.  Do you like poems?  I do especially if they're about Polar Bears!  Here's one I remember from when I was a kid.  It still makes me laugh.

    By:  Sheldon A. Silverstein

    There's a polar bear
    In our Frigidaire—
He likes it 'cause it's cold in there.
With his seat in the meat
And his face in the fish
    And his big hairy paws
    In the buttery dish,
    He's nibbling the noodles,
    He's munching the rice,
    He's slurping the soda,
    He's licking the ice.
And he lets out a roar
    If you open the door.
And it gives me a scare
    To know he's in there—
    That polary bear
    In our Fridgitydaire.

And here's another cute polar bear poem for you.

    The Polar Bear never makes his bed;
He sleeps on a cake of ice instead.
He has no blanket, no quilt, no sheet
Except the rain and snow and sleet.
He drifts about on a white ice floe
While cold winds howl and blizzards blow
And the temperature drops to forty below.
    The Polar Bear never makes his bed;
The blanket he pulls up over his head
Is lined with soft and feathery snow.
If ever he rose and turned on the light,
He would find a world of bathtub white,
And icebergs floating through the night.

    Polar Bear Trivia

What do you get when you cross an icecube with a polar bear? Answer at bottom of page.

Hey Kids Smile How about some Polar Bear trivia.  Did you know...

All polar bears are Capricorns since they are all born in late December or early January.

Polar bear liver has a lethal dose of Vitamin A in it. Eat it and you will die.

Polar bear hair isn't hollow - it's porous. It isn't fiber optic either, as once thought.

Polar bears have the same body temperature as people, 37.2oC (98.6oF). Their fur and blubber are such an excellent insulator that they don't get cold!

Cubs that are less than a year old are called "coys" - Cubs Of the Year.

Churchill has a polar bear jail that is larger than the jail for people.

Even though a polar bears fur looks white it is actually colorless and is made with porous tubes that scatter light and give a white appearance. The porous tubes help the bear to stay warm by channeling the sun's energy directly to the bear's skin.

Polar bear fur is oily and water repellent. The hairs don't mat when wet, allowing the polar bears to easily shake free of water and any ice that may form after swimming.

The polar bear is classified as a marine mammal. Its feet are partially webbed for swimming, and its fur is water-repellent.

The scientific name for the polar bear is Ursus maritimus, which means 'Sea Bear' in Greek.

When a polar bear cub is born it can not see or hear for approximately a month.

Polar bears have been known to swim more than 60 miles without a rest.

    Answer:  Frostbite

    Polar Kids

Hi Kids.  This thread is just for you.  Lets start this years polar bear season off with a story about a little boy who wanted to be a polar bear.  Cool!

    I Wish I Were A Polar Bear

Tom looked out the window. The snow was falling very hard.

"May I go out and play, Dave?" he asked his older brother.

Dave shook his head. "No, it is snowing too hard. It is too cold. Only a polar bear could go out to play today."

"I wish I was a polar bear," said Tom. "I would have a thick white coat. I could play in the snow all day. I would never get cold!"

"What would you do at lunch time?" asked Dave.

"I would come in for soup," said Tom.

Dave laughed and shook his head. "Polar bears do not eat soup. Polar bears hunt their food. They like to eat seals most of all."

Tom made a face. "Yuck," he said. "How do they catch seals?"

"They sneak up on them," said Dave.

"I could do that!" said Tom. "How do they do it?"

"The bears go out on the thick ice. They look for air holes that the seals make. Sometimes the seals will lie on the ice next to the hole. The polar bear creeps up and tries to grab it." Dave tried to grab Tom, but missed him.

"What happens if the ice breaks?" asked Tom as he jumped away. "Would the bear drown?"

"Oh, no," said Dave. "Polar bears love the water. They swim as well as they walk. Their thick coat keeps their skin warm and dry."

"It would be fun to swim like a polar bear," said Tom. "Where do they sleep at night?"

"Polar bears do not have homes like we do," said Dave. "Mother bears make dens in the snow. That is where their babies are born. When the cubs are big enough, they all leave the den.

"Do they have to go to school like us?" asked Tom

Dave shook his head. "Not the way we do. Their mom teaches them how to live. She shows them how to hunt, how to stay safe, and how to swim. Her only job is to take care of her babies."

"It might be fun to be a baby polar bear," Tom said.

"Did you know a polar bear is all grown up before it is five?" asked Dave.

"That is younger than me!" said Tom.

"Many animals grow up faster than we do," said Dave. "If you were a polar bear, you would be all grown up now."

Tom frowned. "I like being here. I do not want to leave home yet. I think I would rather be a boy. I do not want to be a polar bear now."

"I think that is good," said Dave, as he gave Tom a big hug. Then he tickled him. "I would not hug a polar bear!"
