    Thank You, Ebear...

Woo-Hoo...thanks Elizabeth!  Your news was truly a breath of fresh air.  My heart feels better knowing that our friends (for the most part) are still okay and doing well.

It would be interesting to know, next year, if Limpy has a cub or two of her own.

Again, thanks for keeping us informed - you've been a blessing.

     Elizabeth:

Thank you for the time it took you to compile the information about our bears. We all had our favorites and you did a wonderful job filling us in. In a sense, we can now picture being at the falls and the location of our bears.

     Elizabeth,

What a wonderfully thorough report.  It is so good to have news about our friends even if it is bad news.  We know that's life in the wilderness.  As to their not having names, well, of course not, but it is much easier for me to remember a bear by a name associated with its markings or habits than it is to remember a number!  60 bears - oh taht would have been awesome to see.

Can't wait to see more photos and, like Lin, I like your new avatar.

Re: New Friends at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary

How wonderful to find the news about our bears.  It brought tears to my eyes.  I have REALLY missed seeing them.

I love the photo of the nursing mom and also the one of the cub with two little paws in the air.  What a sweet shot.

Well, I have not uploaded any photos to the forum since they changed the format but it looks to me like only 430 pixels of a photo will show up in the column the way it is arranged now.  The rest will be hidden behind the right margin although it seems to download as the whole photo.  That said, I'm on a Mac using a Camino browser so maybe other people are seeing and experiencing something different.  I would suggest trying to upload a photo that is 400 pixels WIDE or 420 and see if that makes a difference.

So...Not Patient pays off?  Hey, your new avatar is nice!  Who is the bear behind you?

It is absolutely thrilling to see your photos and read about what happened and the cubs are so beautiful...hope the mother doesn't lose them from inattentiveness!  A somewhat tense moment reading about the separation!  Interesting that it was okay because the mother decided it was. Thank you for that glimpse into bear behavior.

Luther and Otto  made it!!!  That is so great but it is also sad reading about  the non-returners...but like bears not having names ( um...?), not returning is part of bear life and death.  It is also wonderful to hear of the greater numbers of bears at the falls, though it makes losing the cam there more poignant.

    .  Thank You So Much!!!

*PLEASE NOTE: BEARS DO NOT HAVE NAMES! We sometimes assign them names in order to be able to record and share information about individuals that can be consistently identified.

The staff at McNeil make note of the bears they see when they guide the viewers out into the Sanctuary each day.  At the Falls, they make hourly counts of all the bears they have in view at one time. This year their highest hourly count was 53 and unofficially they observed 60 bears at one time! The first time in ten years that they have seen that many bears at the Falls.

Here’s what I learned about your old friends from the staff’s records for this summer.

LUTHER – at the McNeil Falls all of July, fishing the same spot at “The Coffee Shop”

TED-LIKE – at the Falls late in July

OTTO – back at the Falls and “doing great”

CUSTER – very light blonde male, in mid-twenties, aging

ALBERT – one of the very old bears from last summer, did not return

MONKEYFACE – an older bear that submerged himself to catch fish on the far side, did not return

ROCKY – took MONKEYFACE’S place as the underwater bear

RENO – a young male subadult and buddy of Braveheart, did not return and is likely using another feeding area

DEREK – I don’t remember this bear, but maybe you do, he was the last large male seen at the Sanctuary this summer

JORDAN – was one of the first bears seen at the Sanctuary on May 21st courting a young female bear they call LIMPY

MCDOUGAL  and TRUE COAT fished the Coffee Shop

ELVIS, DUSTY and ROCKY were “primary players” at the Falls, fishing actively

AARDVARK and WOLFGANG also fished the Coffee Shop

TEDDY’S TWINS (Pluto and Goofy) – dark subadults we’d see playing in the pool are probably 6.5 this year and were present at the Falls

DONNIE- who holds his fish with his paw fished the Coffee Shop

Other “named” bears observed at the Falls include: BRAVEHEART, HOLDEN, MINDY (formerly S-CAR-GO for his s-shaped scar), DALLAS, TED TOO, ELIZABETH (dark female), BOOG, BAB(bad ass bear), GIMPY (old female), PLUNGER, EARS (has an ear tag from a previous study), WHITE CLAWS, IVORY CLAWS (female), VANILLA (female), BLONDE BEGGAR, CRISCO, DROOP, PINTAIL, GOLDILOCKS (subadult female),  HORSESHOE, CORNELIUS, DIAMOND EYES (female), LEFT EAR OFF, WISHBONE, POLLY (female), SCRAPER, SOUTHPAW, APEMAN, 4-CLAW, IVAN, EYE-DROP, WHITE COLLAR, TWO-NECK, SHED-BELLY, FROGGY, RIGHT NOTCH,  and SCRAPPIE.

The guide noted that some bears are regulars at the Falls, like Luther and Rocky, while some bears just drop in for a week or so at the peak of the run.

I'll try to get some more photos up today and a report on the family groups, not listed above.

Elizabeth, thank you so much for the wonderful photos. They are all great but I LOVE the nursing shot! Great to hear that Holden and Braveheart were still around.

Elizabeth - you made my morning!  Finally some photos and news of our friends and the Mom and cubs is priceless.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

If you are resizing, 600 wide x 400 high is usually good.  On some programs you can check a box to ekkep the aspect ratio and then changing one dimension will automatically change the other in proportion.

Hi Elizabeth and how wonderful to see Holden and Braveheart--as well as the other bears.  What great pictures!  We look forward to seeing more as well as getting an update on the bears we know.  Thank you for gathering the info.

I downloaded one of the photos and it looks like the WIDTH is 533 pixels and the HEIGHT is 400.  That would explain why part of the picture is getting cut off.

Old Friends at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary

Ok - real quick for those of you having difficulty being p------...here's a quick shot of Holden (left across river) and Braveheart (rear to camera on center rock). These sub-adults were fishing the Falls free of the bigger dominant bears who have left the Sanctuary for other areas. I think I only saw Braveheart away from the Falls once. Don't they look almost like Big bears now? Both of them have really filled out. I almost didn't recognize Braveheart (his head and "aft" have swelled) until the guide pointed out that Braveheart is missing a claw on his left paw. Injuries like that, while unfortunate for the bear, really help with the bear identification.

Bears were catching spawned-out chum salmon, fresh pink salmon (aka humpies) and dolly varden at this time of year.

More later, as soon as I can process them. Also, my notes on the bears you wanted to know about are at home. I'll get those out soon as well. Enjoy!

    Elizabeth

New Friends at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary

Ok Bear Fans - Here Goes!

If you are new to this Forum, I will be posting photos from my recent visit to McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, where the WildCam Grizzlies camera was located during 2006 and 2007.

Today's photos are from the first family group I observed. This is a new bear to the Sanctuary, as far as the staff out there knows (females are hard to recognize). We started our day in the wind and rain wading out towards Augustine Volcano into the tidal flats east of camp during the low tide. This female was fishing a couple hundred yards out into the tidal flat. Her cubs are this year's cubs, also called "spring cubs," or cubs of the year (coy). They were born in the den last January or February - remember when we celebrated the Bear Birthday on January 1? We were celebrating these little bears. Their mom has a way of wandering quite far away from them, as you'll see. For a little while we were in between the mom and her cubs, which in most other places is NOT ADVISED, but we had just been standing in one spot and the mother bear walked right past us and left her cubs feeding on a salmon carcass near us, so the situation was on the bear's terms. As you'll see, the family was eventually reunited and all was well.

    Re: old friends and new

Welcome back Elizabeth!  Well, 6G of photos/videos sounds like you realize that YOU appear to be the source of our bear fix for the summer--hope it's not too stressful having all these cam-deprived starving bear fans hanging around breathing on the monitor and mouse waiting for photos of real live 2008 bearsSmile

I'm not too surprised the bears we know were gone from the falls.  Last year they were gone on the 18th of August--but probably by waiting till later, you had a better chance at winning the lottery and the experience at all.  So we are happy you got to go and will try to wait as p-----tly as we can for pictures.

We'll also be happy to hear the news about the bears we know, even without pictures.

I'm looking forward to your photos very much, thanks in advance.

    Hey Bear Fans!

I flew out of the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary yesterday evening. I took almost 6GB of photos and video, so it will take me a bit to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. I'll get some photos up as soon as I can.

Did not see ANY of the large males we are used to seeing at McNeil Falls. It was too late in the season to see them. The large males have dispersed to other areas. I do have several pages of notes on some of your favorite bears and some photos of some of the sub-adults you've gotten to know. Braveheart is king of the (off-season) Falls, looks like a maturing bear now, very filled out.

I'll have photos of multiple family groups (mothers with cubs), as that is what we mostly saw along with sub-adult bear, both male and female.

Let me catch my breath and I'll be back with some pics.

    Elizabeth

Elzabeth, you are so lucky, Now I know we will get to see some amazing pictures & read some interesting stories from you again. I'm wondering if I'll be able to recognoze the regular bears from the pics I saved & named from last year. My favourites were the ones who just stood there with their mouths open & waiting for a salmon to come flying in. & LO & Behold, some did catch a few that way. I liked Waldo & Monkeyface

I agree with you Karen.  Mooses listen well but they are a bit short on p-----.   It will be lots of fun to see EBears pictures of her visit to our McNeil bears.  I sure hope she sees some of them, particularly her Braveheart.
