Ya know, I think you're right, that is a ciccada, along with crickets and bat chirping/smacking.  What a symphony, huh?!

Aren't we getting close to the time the lion was seen last night?

I think your first instince is the best guess. I don't know what else it could be, but then I'm no expert on bugs and insects. Just know I don't usually appreciate them in person.

It is a steady sort of very loud but constant warble ringing kinda sound.  For sure different from the crickets.

Sorry, I'm not sure which sound you mean. Is it the pulsing, high pitched sound? If so, you may be right, but I could not say for sure.

Wow, what's that sound ?? Sounds like an alarm.  Probably some kind of ciccada but can someone confirm ?

I love the sounds; what fun to hear bat smacks. Unfortunately, my cats do not share my pleaure; drives them into a state of anxious frustration, bouncing off the furniture seeking the source!

thanks to all for the sightings report. I have disabled my standby and leave my RP screen on. When I have to be away I first note the time on the counter and the Botswana time. When I come back I can check the sightings thread and backtrack to see for myself. The lightbulb just came on today, so I couldn't check out the lion report. While there may be some gormless folks about, I must thank all who have contributed tips and helpful advice, and enabled me to have a better viewing experience. I've even learned how to best use Gadwin Printscreen so I can share highlights with friends and family.  Thanks good people.

George and Gracie seemed to ALWAYS be out last year, day or night. At night they would just kind of sit on the edge of the pond, pretty close to the water. Look like rocks, but chests looks whiter.

Fatty makes some splashing sounds, sometimes, but there are catfish and other fish in the pond. There are pictures from last year when he caught a catfish that was almost as large as he was, and he was at least 4 feet long then....at 4 years of age!

Hi Karen--Thank you.  I was wondering what the smacking sound was.  Knew I saw bats, but had no idea that they talk.  Now I know.  Now we can discuss sights and sounds.

I keep hearing a splashing sound, do you think that could be fatty?  Or do the fish jump?  It sounded pretty large, so I'm not sure.  Where does fatty hang out?

Nope, but I understand some people on the other thread heard them, then saw them.

Somebody said they come out at night, too?

I know this appears to be a duplicate thread, but it is not.

This is for the people who want to freely discuss animal SIGHTINGs, as well as animal SOUNDs.  Apparently, those of us who were discussing bat sounds were upsetting those who strictly wanted only visual sightings.  This is a way to make both happy.

Please do not misconstrue this as something other than what it is - merely a place for those to discuss sounds as well as sightings.  No hard feelings - just trying to let everybody be happy at the forum. Nothing more needs be said.  Enjoy posting here.

    Big Smile
