Clips of many birdsongs can be heard at http://www.sounddogs.com/results.asp?Type=&CategoryID=1009&SubcategoryID=35

Unfortunately not too many southern African birdsongs are on that list.  The only Botswana birds I see on the list are ostrich, laughing dove, canary, greyheaded bushshrike, blackheaded oriole, bleating warbler, red-billed hornbill, crested francolin, black korhaan, and helmeted guinea fowl.  There may be a few others I missed.

I rebooted and got the sound back.  Still trying to identify the heron.  Please let me know if you get confirmation on what type it was.  The list (online bird guide) I use at http://www.wildlifesafari.info/botswana_birds.htm shows 10 species of herons in Botswana.  The Squacco Heron's bill doesn't look yellow either from most online pics I've found, but that could have been it.

According to Newmans Guide: Fairly common to very common rsident. In non-breeding plumage paler, less contrasting upper parts, the bill yellowish, with blackish culmen. Legs, normally pae yellow but pinkish-red for a fe days, when breeding. In flight looks like a white egret unless upperparts visible.

    From Paul Grober: (9-25-06)

Good morning everybody, sorry I have trouble getting a cursor in the reply box. Appologies for the technical problem earlier. Murphy's law - of course it would happen when nobody's here.

The heron is a green-backed heron and the silhouetted birds were lilac-breasted rollers. Enjoy your day.

Thanks, those links are really helpful!  The song of the thrush nightingale is another one at the above link.  It's a vagrant species in Botswana.

I am sure it is somewhere on here, but this forum is getting huge! What plant has those beautiful flowers? They look almost like they are glowing!

The photo gallery needs to be updated, we have seen so many more birds, plants and critters that aren't on the gallery, it makes it hard to identify stuff.

Someone the other day said that those big yellow flowers were hibiscus, but I'm not sure of the exact variety.  I agree that that the gallery needs to be updated....especially for birds.  I found a complete checklist of Botswana birds at http://www.camacdonald.com/birding/africabotswanachecklist.htm and it's likely that many of these visit the pond.

USNA Mom - Sounds like it could be a Hadada Ibis ... the call is like its name, quite harsh like a crow and the notes descend in pitch and volume until it tails off. They are a kind of hair-trigger early-warning bird, alerting everything else to anything strange and they are a real pain if you are on safari and hoping to get near the animals. There were a pair at the pond this morning pond-time

    USNA Mom,

If you go to the Animal Sightings and Sounds thread, look under "From Carmen for your information" - I think it's about post #8214.  Anyway, Carmen has listed every possible bird sound (and other animals, too) web site there is.

    Bird Sound identification

    Name: USNA Mom
    E-mail: Not specified

It's just after 6:00 AM in Botswana and I just been the most amazing bird call! Is there some way (or someone) who has a working knowledge of bird calls who might be able to tell me what I heard? It was a very loud call of very distinct decending notes. O don't know how else to describe it.

Hope someone can help, or point to me to a website of Botswana bird calls. I'd know it in a second if I heard it again!
